Which credit card should I get?

I have been wasting my money by not getting rewards/miles/cash back. So now Im curious which credit card I should sign up for. Here is what I spend my money on:

1. Gas. I spend a lot on gas
2. Groceries. I spend a lot on groceries as well
3. Electricity, water, and cable. Ouch

Thats pretty much the major source of expenditures. Which card will give me the most back?

Credit card promotions are cyclical, I would find a card that you would be most interested in then try to wait for a deal on it.

Amex cards are good for their identity fraud protection and they have some really good rewards programs. Also, they can be set up to autopay utilities and the like... Goodluck!

I would go with Discover. Good Cashbacks and good 5% cashbacks.

If you are OK with getting cashback in a form of gift certificates and if you plan to spend more than $2,000 on gas, groceries and utilities for the next 12 months, you may consider diamond preferred rewards card from citibank. It gives 5 ThankYou points on purchases made at supermarkets, drugstores, and gas stations for the first 12 months. 10000 points can be exchanged for a $100 gift card to many stores. You can read a review of this card and see its Daskaloff [wikipedia.org] rating here [findbestcard.com]. Also, check here [thankyou.com] if any of gift card currently available through ThanYou network make it worthwhile to collect points for.
I am not aware about any cards that have a special cashback rate for utilities such as electricity and water.

I got impression that the categories for 5% Discover Card cash back changes every 3 months.

http://www.discovercard.com/custo..._5cb_3_txt

For instance, from Aprli 1st to June 30th, you can get 5% cashback only on purchases at Department Stores, Clothing Stores, Home Improvement Centers, and Lawn & Garden Centers.

Or may be I am just looking at a wrong Discover Card?

Spend $10000 to get $100 gift card? That isn't all that great, and is only 1% back. Or did you mean spend $2000 and get 5 points for each dollar, thus netting you $10,000 points (and a $100 card)?

yes, that is true (with that particular Disc. Card) ... However, with the Discover Open Road card (which I recommend to the OP) you get 5% back on the first $100 of gas and automotive purcahses each month. If you spend considerably more, get multiple cards. My wife and I each have one and we both spend a little over $100 each month on gas. Everything else I put on my fidelity visa card. 1.5% on all purchases (redeemable in $75 increments). I think that is the best 1, 2 punch for incentives without getting a citibank or capital one card. I have seen too many instances of Citi and Cap one having terrible customer service and changing rules for programs constantly.

You can use this rewards calculator to see which rewards card will pay you the most for your normal spending profile:
http://www.creditcardtuneup.com/

Some possibilities include AmEx Blue Cash, Citi Diamond Rewards, and Capital One No Hassle Miles Ultra for Professionals. Plug your numbers into the calculator to see which one will be best for you.

That is correct. I should have written "if... you plan to spend more than $2,000 on gas, groceries and utilities for the next 12 months". If you spend $2000 on gas, groceries and utilities during the first 12 months, you are supposed to get 10000 points that can be exchanged for a $100 gift card.

Doesn't AMEX offer 2% cash back on charges for gas now?
