No credit rating expert, but I would be slightly concerned that "applying" for this upgrade may trigger some info request from the credit reporting agencies, and if it is presented to them like a credit card account cancellation + new credit card application, that will in turn have a negative effect on your credit score. Any finance jocks wish to comment?

I also have to ask myself, what is Amazon's incentive for giving you a card with improved benefits?

They look at your account history. I called and I asked. No credit check. It is just a promotional offer of doubling points.

Yes that will be the result, however its not a big deal.
Your credit score will go down by about 5 points for a month or two and will be back up to the same level or may be higher (provided everything else with you stays constant) in 3-4 months.

Nothing to fret about opening and closing credit cards as long as you don't do these things when you are getting ready to apply for a mortgage or something big like that.

Calling the upgrade # is probably better than what I did. I upgraded my account via email a month ago--but they said they had to send me new card (with same CC# and all my acct. stayed the same--same interest rate etc . . .) vs just using your existing card which I'd rather have done. When I asked about the double pts they said that was only for new cardholders, BUT I noticed on my bill, I am receiving the double pts--6pts per Amazon purchase--I've only used this card at Amazon in the past month.

I'm not sure it counts as a new credit card app since all the info stayed the same on my acct. But I'm not 100% sure either way. I do know when I had the 5pts offer from my ATT Citi card, it did say by calling to change my pts system, it gave Citi the right to change aspects of my card including interest rate--but so far, Citi hasn't done that.

With the Amazon card, I don't think there's any fine print with that kind of language on it and when I did it via email, I still have it where they clearly say everything on my acct. stays the same including interest rate if you're worried about that.

Wanted to add my pts carried over from my old Amazon card--and in the email to me they highlighted some of the new benefits, including the $50 check for 5000 pts--so you can cash in your pts but before they'd automatically send you a gift certificate, now you have to request it online I believe--but they sent me a new card. If the upgrade allows you to keep your old card, then probably you can only get gift cards.

I got a postcard about that yesterday.

the csr said there is no new card

ok the one I talked to says there are actually 2 offers under the "3-2-1" promotion.

With both you will get the bonus double points for 90 days but the only difference is 1 of the offers requires you to get a new account number and a new card and the other lets you keep the same card.

So if you get a CSR telling you that you need a new account number/card tell them to keep looking for the other promotion.

As mentioned above, they also told me they will not distribute GCs immediately when you get to 2500 points and that you can tell them what you want instead (Amazon GC, cash or travel coupons)
