If you are a contractor, nothing. But for example if you are a homeowner that needs a special tool for a project (i.e. wet saw, 1/2" hammer drill, or air stapler), the Harbor Freight model is a great deal as it will do the job and save you a lot of $$$... And some things it really doesn't matter -- sand paper, mallets, bungee cords & tie downs, trucker chains, anvils, etc. I find it hard to go to Harbor Freight and not leave with something!

I hear you- thanks for the advice. Does anyone know if Chicago Electric makes good tools and does anyone know anything about this work bench ITEM 93454-2vga.

I'm pretty sure Chicago Electric and Harbor Freight are the same company. The power tools are imported. I bought a Chicago Electric impact wrench years ago. I would bet that the DeWalt version is made by the same manufacturer in China. That's not to say that they are built exactly the same, but the Chicago Electric version is 1/4 of the price of the DeWalt.
I normally buy tools to last as long as possible, but you must take the amount of use you expect out of a tool before spending 4x more for "contractor quality" brand makes sense.

Compare the two models I'm speaking of...the specs are very close:

It appears to be OK, but you can buy metal braces and add your own wood to it and make a lot sturdier bench for less money. Based on experiences with HF, I would not bet on the quality of it, although I have never seen the bench assembled in their store.

Take a look around, am sure you can do a lot better.

As far as longevity of usefulness, there is no comparison of DeWalt and Chicago tools.

When I am buying something that I KNOW I will use on a regular basis, I opt for the better quality (in spite of the higher price.) I bought my son & sons-in-law Chicago cordless drills a few years ago for 1/4 or 1/5 of what I paid for my DeWalt, but then again, they are young and I knew they would be left out in the rain, etc. When one wanted to build a deck, the DeWalt kept on plugging away, long after the Chicago drills had given up the ghost.

When I am not sure I am going to use a tool over a long time, I will grab a Chicago Tool cheapie and figure its a "throw away." Was cutting landscape timbers, so looked at SawzAll from Milwaukee Tools at over $100 and CT for $20. It almost cut what I needed, but I took it back to the store, got another one and it lasted until I finished the job. Its now has been retired in the shop for 2+ years, so happy that I didn't waste the extra $$$.

I bought a electric staple gun from HF, then got tied up and didn't use it until the 90 day exchange warranty was past. When I opened it and tried to use it, it didn't work. Went back, bought a new one for about $30 and returned the old one, so only paid for one, but second one was a piece of crap, didn't work at all, soooooo....... I was really out the $30 or so and had to buy another to do the job I was wanting to complete.

My advice to the kids has been, if you are going to use a cordless or electric tool right away and are not going to be tackling a "contractor job" (i.e. building a deck, etc.), go to HF. If you want a long-term tool, HF is not for you.

As far as clamps, levels, and miscellaneous tools, HF is OK, just don't expect Craftsman or SnapOn quality out of them.

As a contractor, I agree with with Mickie3, I normally buy quality tools that will take a beating. I have never been disappointed with my Milwaulkee tools, they just don't stop. But I am an Electrical Contractor, so when do I need a Tile Saw?

When I was remodeling my kitchen and bath, I considered renting one from The Home Depot, I would have needed it for about 4 days at $50 per day. My brother and I went halfers on a 10" wet tile saw on sale for $200. Since then I have done 2 bathrooms and a kitchen. He did his kitchen and we even lend it out a couple of times. Worked just fine, (it is a Chicago Electric) It still sits in my garage ready for the next project.

If I was a Tile contractor, of course I would have never bought it, but for home use it was money well spent and I would buy it again in a heart beat. The only thing was I did have to spring another $50 to get a decent blade.

All said HF make great "disposable" tools.

Are you kidding me? You think nothing at HF is quality unless you're a contractor? How much precision does it take to make.... a c-clamp, an air coupler, air gauge, impact sockets, spring compressor, air guages, screwdrivers, hose reel, pneumatic lift stool, creeper, etc....

Harbor Freight charges a reasonable price for these tools. The very same pneumatic stool that you buy at HF fro $10 is sold branded "Craftsman" and sold at Sears for $30.

If you can get an air-hammer for $6 (as opposed to $30), a creeper for $12 (as opposed to $45), a 3" air-cutoff tool for $5 (as opposed to $30), a 25" breaker bar for $7(as opposed to an 18" for $25 at lowes), an impact socket set for $17 (as opposed to $120), and over several years of using these tools, never once have one give out on you, it's a slick deal.

Long-time lurker, but I just had to register to say this.
Cheers.
