Up to $700 OFF any hdtv over $999- BB ymmv
BEFORE YOU POST QUESTIONS THAT MAY HAVE BEEN ANSWERED MANY TIMES--- PLEASE USE THE "SEARCH THIS THREAD" OPTION ABOVE TO RIGHT

The 3 most popular deals, when they come up, are:
1) The Panny 42pz77u 42" 1080P for $1499 with free $500 Blu Ray (saleable for $400), $600 off for HDA, and $200 rebate. ($299 net)
2) The LG 42" lcd 720P for $1049 with $700 off for HDA ($349 net)
3) The Westy 42" 1080P for $989 with $600 off for HDA ($389 net)
You have to check the weekly ads to see when these specials come on.

UPDATE 12/30-- Possibly the best deal ever for those who want a rear-projector set is the Panasonic 56" dlp 1080P with card slot etc. currently $997. Half of stores will raise the price $3 to get a set into the HDA, making this set $397 with HDA. Starting Sunday with the HDA raised to $700 this will become $297!!! The AmEx promo would take another $150 off as a giftcard. (No the $200 Panny install rebate is only for plasmas.)

A 46" Samsung lcd is also on sale this week for $1499. with a $100 gift card to nflshops.com.

UPDATES

Panasonic has renewed it's $200 rebate for plasma installs so that's another $200 off:
http://forms.young-america.com/77...e_A_r1.pdf

Here is a link to current promos at BB, (not all are there)
http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspa...e=category

Many BB's are now just asking you to phone DTV and subscribe when you get home!! In store signup is a hassle for them.[/U][/B]

Sales tax is on the price of the tv before HDA is applied.

CC has the same $300 off for DTV but they verify actual installation of DTV and activation.

Box dimensions are on the BB website for each model. Pleeeeze don't flood the posts with requests for dimensions!
The way hdtv's are packed is that they sit on a sturdy base which can be lifted with the "box" more of a wrapper. Don't be scared to removed the box to transport. The Panny 42" 1080P is an especially big box and heavy and plasmas shouldn't be laid on their side for even a short time because of the glass. But again, it sits on a sturdy sled in the box.

Thanks to fatwalletlurker for his great thread on this!

THE DEAL:

http://www.flickr.com/photos/1455...396910435/

Above is the link to the BB promo. It requires:

1) Ordering DTV for $300 off the hdtv

2) Getting an audio system of $499 or more for another $100 off the hdtv

3) Ordering installation for another $100 off the hdtv, and

4) Getting a blu-ray or hd dvd player for yet another $100 off.

This thread is to discuss the HD Advantage deal and customers' experiences with it, not to encourage anyone to get the deal with the intent beforehand to return anything.

Of course anyone getting this deal would plan on keeping the DTV and accessories when they purchase them but of course you can change your mind and return any of them them and if so here is what happens:

You can immediately cancel the DTV order, pretend to order it, or ask for a number you can call when you get a chance and keep the $300 off the hdtv BB does not verify activation as CC does.
Almost everyone who changes their mind and returns the audio system and the hd player also gets to keep the $100 off each for those.
The install is harder to return for most people but can be done. However, most stores want you to go to the customer service desk at the original store to do so. This is because unless canceled by Geek Squad the install order stays on the computer forever.

Store people tell you that you must buy a DTV hd receiver for $99 but this is not true- let the DTV salesperson on the phone straighten them out on that.

Some people have also used the 10% off and actually gotten a $999 lg hdtv for $269 after returns.

No, this is not a sure thing except for the cancelable DTV $300. But it works easily for 99% of people. Customers have been doing this with the DTV $300 for months.

Anyone looking for a hdtv at BB should certainly get the $300 off for HDTV and change their mind if they want.
If someone decides not to keep the hd player and audio system the $100 off the hdtv for each of those stays.
Most people get to keep the $100 off the hdtv after returning the install also, but this is more ymmv.

My BB let me return/repurchase a Toshiba a2 hd dvd I got last friday for $99 for the $100 off the hdtv. No promo package code showed.

I purchased a $500 surround system which I returned next day but the $100 discount on the hdtv stayed.

I canceled the DTV service next morning and the $300 off stayed.

For installation I chose "programming a harmony remote" for $150 and the csr laughed and said "they should be ashamed" when she took this off.

I couldn't use the 10% off but some may be able to- very ymmv.

I purchased an open box Westy 47w1 that had been marked down from $1199 to $899- they raised the price back to list so I could get the hd deal and gave me $300 gift card which they applied to the purchase. The deal is not supposed to be for open box or certain special deals.

In the end I got a Westinghouse 47w1 1080p floor model which was reduced already to $999 for $299 plus tax minus the 4% rewards rebate I'll get.

Some Tips I've Learned and posted at FW earlier:

1. The DTV cancellation is easy. Goes without a hitch. Many simply hang up on DTV after the salesperson hands them the phone. The salesperson has the DTV promo sku and just has to enter it without any verification.

2.Many salespeople tell you that you must purchase a DTV receiver for $99. You do not have to- DTV provides new custome rs a receiver for free and if neccessary have a DTV rep talk to the salesperson and explain this. Otherwise if you buy one you may have to ebay it for $99.

3. Leave the tv for pickup or delivery. This way you can make sure the return deal works first.

4. Most $499 audio setups are a PAIN because they are so big and heavy to carry. Go for the Klipsch Qunitet III which is small and easy to tote! It's just speakers but qualifies.(Otherwise get a $500 receiver.)

5. Get the installation called "Programming a Harmony Remote" for $150. You don't have to, but I'd purchase a $99 Harmony also. If you need to return, returning a remote and it's programming makes sense. CSR's get a chuckle out of this one when returning. Just say your friend programmed your remote for you. (You'll have an installation slip from the salesperson and MUST have a cancellation of install # to convince the csr you don't need to go to Magnolia.)).

6. If you want an item that is open box they can raise it back to full price and give you a gift card for the discount and apply it to the purchase. This is not BB kosher but been done a lot. Also for tv's that are $989, like the West 42" 1080p, they can do the same to get it to $999, although about half the salespeople refuse to and half do.

7. Make your decision on what to keep or return asap. So many are doing this deal. If BB doesn't stop it they'll run out of hdtv's!

8. If you have trouble with a return of an accessory exchange it instead. This way you get a clean new receipt.

9. Stay calm- if it doesn't work you're out nothing but time.

For encounters with challenged salespeople you may want to help them by supplying the sku's for the promos.

The sku for the BB $300 off HD Advantage is Package 101839

The sku for the DTV $300 promo is 8309109

Seasoned salespeople know how to work the BB system better to get a deal.
Novices gum up the works and take a loooong time putting the deal together.

I prefer Dish Network HD over DTV and for those who get this and cancel the DTV consider the free HD-DVR you can get from Dish. Only Dish has the VOOM HD channels which are amazing quality nature and arts channels. They also have most other HD channels now- I think around 60. This offer is even good if you're a current Dish subscriber so long as you have not had a promotion in the past twelve months. The Dish HD DVR sells for about $500, is at least as good as TiVo , and you can "lease" it for $5/month. If you're new to HD you also get the first 6 months of HD free, which just costs $20/mo over regular regular Dish. Installation and dishes are always free.

The free HD DVR is as good a deal as the one in this thread!
(I'm not sniping anyone as I'm the OP on both this thread and that one. )

So does this deal still work? YES!
Yes, the regular HDA deal for $500-600 off of a TV should still work fine for everyone (except maybe in California lol). The Sharp free blu-ray deal is partially dead. You still get the free blu-ray player, but this week the discount is coming off the player and not the TV. You can still sell the BRP on ebay/craigslist but you will not be able to return it to BB for cash back. The Panny deal for $500 off a 1080p and blu-ray player TVs has ended.

Edit 1/28/08: There is now an additional $100 HDA discount if you purchase a PS3. Not sure how long this is valid for

Newbs Guide to the Free blu-ray deal with Sharp TV (aka "the script") by adogg0911
Prices are for example only and are not current, BB changes its pricing every week

This is the same process for doing the regular HDA deal for TVs without free bluray players too, you just are not going to get as much money back because you won't get the extra $399 bluray discount

Note: Best Buy has ruined our fun and now the BRP is now ringing up $0 in the Sharp deal. You can no longer return it for cash back you need to sell it or try to return without receipt for a gift card.

Can I use coupons/PM to another store and do the HDA deal? No, you have about a 99.9999% chance of being shot down on this.

1. Go to BB and purchase your TV on HDA deal - you buy the TV, a $499 HT item and they give you the blu-ray free

2. Do the DirectTV signup, either actually sign up and cancel when you get home or just hang up when the CSR walks away and then tell him its done when he gets back.

Note: some people are reporting that their CSR is insisting that they talk to DTV after you do the signup to verify that you actually signed up. If this happens you either have to go ahead and do the sign up and cancel or move on to the next Best Buy and try again

3. Your items will ring up with all the discounts off the TV so your receipt will look something like:

42" Aquos: $1699-$500 = $1199
blu-ray DVD $0
HT item $499 (or whatever you paid)

**Ask your CSR for a gift receipt**

The $500 in discounts are $300 DTV, $100 next gen DVD, $100 for HT item

4. Go home, get rid of your old crappy TV and set up your fancy new one. (Whoever updated this, you don't need to wait until the returns are done to set up your TV. You can return the open TV for any reason for 30 days)

5. The next day go to a different BB and tell them you want to exchange the HT item for a different HT item. You can make up a story if you want but they really don't care. If you are doing the regular HDA deal (not Sharp free blu-ray) you should also exchange your blu-ray for a different blu-ray player. If you have done the Sharp deal your BRP shows $0 on your receipt so you can't exchange it. You will have to keep it, ebay/craigslist it, or try to return without receipt for a gift card.

The easiest way to make the exchange is to get a new bluray and a new HT item that are exactly the same price as the first ones you purchased. The CSR will do an even exchange on the items for you and you will walk out of BB with a clean exchange receipt only showing the HT item and the bluray player.

Option 2: If the blu-ray player or HT item you got is on sale cheaper at another store like CC, HH Gregg, etc or even bestbuy.com you can price match instead of doing an exchange. This will get you a clean receipt for your item without the hassle of bringing the items to the store.

Note on Gift Receipts: It is probably not necessary to use a gift receipt for the exchange as long as you are exchanging for a HT item and blu-ray player as they still meet the conditions of the HDA deal. If you are not doing an even exchange for your items you will want to use your original receipt for sure to avoid getting any money returned to you on a gift card. As long as you are exchanging the player for another blu-ray player and the HT item for another HT item at this point there should be no issues using your original receipt for this step.

Congratulations, you have now separated your TV and bluray movies from the player and HT junk you want to return

6. Go home and enjoy your new, about to be heavily discounted HDTV

7. The next day go back to a different BB and tell them you want to return the HT item. If you want to make up a story you can but that CSR is making $7 an hour and doesn't really care. They will credit you back the money in your original form of purchase unless it was cash, then you will be waiting 10 days for a check. If you are not doing the Sharp deal you can now also return your BRP.

For people having trouble doing the return: If you have trouble doing the final return of the items you should try exchanging your blu-ray player and HT item for items that are not typically involved with this deal like printers, video game systems, digital cameras, etc. The final return on these items will be less likely to raise the HDA deal red flag in the stores that have caught on to the deal.

8. You are done, go home and start looking for the next deal

Important: Never go back to the original Best Buy that you did the TV purchase at for any of the exchanges/returns, you will probably end up getting hosed. So what if you have to drive 40 miles to the second closest Best Buy, you are saving $900 so there is going to be some work involved

Note: If you want to bother with trying to return the install you can save another $100 off your TV by adding install to the HDA package. I decided it wasn't worth the trouble. This is the main way the panny deal differs, since the panny has a rebate for the cost of the install so you don't need to return it

Note: Look for a clueless high school kid CSR to help you with your TV purchase. You don't want the guy with the little "Home Theater Expert" badge on his shirt. You will still get the deal, but he may ask to talk to DirectTV and will try and sell you cables, a warranty, geek squad install, etc. The kid could care less so you will be out faster and with less hassle.

Note on DirectTV hardware: do not let the CSR make you purchase any DirectTV hardware. As soon as you tell him you want the TV ask about the HDA deal and about the DirectTV part. Tell him you called DTV and they told you that you don't need to buy any hardware. If that isn't enough for him, as soon as he hands you the phone to talk to the DirectTV rep ask the rep "Do I need to buy any hardware at BB or will you provide that". He will say you don't, so then say "can you explain this to my CSR" and hand the phone back to the CSR.

The sub deal: THE SUB DEAL IS DEAD - you no longer get a free sub with the Quintet system

Note on Returns: YMMV but if the store has to order the TV for you the safest thing to do is wait to do any of your returns or the Direct TV cancelation until AFTER you have the TV in your possession. People, especially in So Cal, have reported that when they go to get their TV Best Buy is checking to see if anything has been returned.

Do not return/exchange anything on the same day you buy it. Wait until the next day so that your order information is available at all stores.

If you live in California you better follow the script exactly if you want to pull off the deal

Some BBs *might* be catching on to this deal: If you have any difficulties with returns/exchanges at a store just leave and try again at another one. After the initial exchange you might try adding an extra step and exchange your blu-ray and HT item for other similarly priced items in the store (digital camera, printer, etc) and then return those items for cash/credit later. For the few people reporting trouble the red flag was either the return of a blu-ray player/HT item or trying to pick up a TV after they had already returned the other items

Note on Pricematches: Do NOT try and pricematch your TV later if it goes on sale for cheaper than when you got it, you will probably get hosed. And unless your CSR is a total idiot you won't get any money either because the HDA and blu-ray discounts have made your TV cheaper than it will ever go on sale. The only way to get a pricematch is if you have not done any of the returns yet. Then you can just have them re-ring your entire order and start from there.

End of Newb Guide

Additional information about the HDA deal:

The best deals change weekly, so please take a look at the BB circular to determine what the best deal for you may be. Note that the TV has to be $999 or higher, and there are multiple exclusions (Power Price, open box, all coupons, price matches, etc) and there seems to be little chance of finding a manager or CSR willing to override those exclusions anymore

The deal seems to work equally well everywhere in the country, with the exception being Southern California, and to some extent the Bay Area. The managers there are giving a hard time to anyone trying to return anything, or even those who attempt to buy the package.

HD advantage deal details from the BB site:
http://www.bestbuy.com/hdadvantage

According to Best Buy's return policy, this you have the right to return items from a bundle for the price paid as a part of the bundle (see the attached PDF)

http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?type=page&contentId=1043363607164&id=c at12098
Bundle Purchases
You may return bundle purchases in accordance with our standard Return Policy. If you
are unsatisfied with an individual item you purchased as part of a bundle package, you
may return that item separately.
Note: In some cases, a bundle discount has been applied to each item. You will be
refunded the discounted price, which may differ from the price if you purchased it
individually. To review the amount you will be refunded for each individual item within
the bundle, visit the My Account page after you submit your order.

Note that the discount applies to the TV only, not the other items. Therefore the other items are refunded at full price.

When DTV asks for your SSN to run a credit report, just tell them to run the credit report on your address.

RETURNING ITEMS FOR A GIFT CARD - USING THE GC TO CREDIT BACK TO YOUR CREDIT CARD!!!!!!

All you have to do is tell them to refund the entire amount to your CC and re-ring transaction. Whether you've returned the items or not doesn't matter, you'll just be using the GC to "pay for" those same items. In effect, your GC/Store Credit is used to pay for the items. It does not matter if you've already returned them, they can still be re-rung. Once they refund the whole amount to your CC, get the whole transaction re-rung and hand them the GC to take off the total. Then simply pay for the rest with the same credit card you used originally (or any other CC I suppose). Once again:

1. Return items for GC
2. Have entire deal refunded to your CC and re-rung. You now owe BB X amount of dollars, let's say $1400.
3. Give GC (let's say $800) to CSR to use towards the purchase. You now owe BB $600.
4. Pay remaining balance (the $600) on CC

Another approach that does not require a re-ring of the original HDA transaction:
Buy something more expensive than the gift card balance, pay with a gift card and your credit card. The next day return the item. Chances are the full amount will be posted to your credit card. If not, repeat, maybe add an exchange or price match then return using the exchange/PM receipt, so the CSR will not easily notice part of the original payment was on a GC.

Panasonic Delivery and Installation rebate:
Calibration is not covered. The delivery and installation can be on a separate receipt, from a different company, just provide the documentation. Questions? Go to www.PanasonicConsumerRebates.com
or call 1-866-852-3590 to check rebate status.
M-F 9:00 am-5:00 pm est.

Wall Mount Tip:
Don't buy a wall mount from BB - they are very overpriced. Get them from Monoprice instead for about $25.
http://www.monoprice.com/products/product.asp?c_id=108&cp_id=10828&cs_id=1082801&p_i d=3900&seq=1&format=2

Time and time again people are seeing problems with attempting to get a refund for the install. Your best bet seems to be either get an install for $100, and then you break even, or just skip it. Or perhaps the harmony report install, if you're willing to risk $50 for it. Many people are having a real bitch of a time getting this back. More so now then when this started.

Fake the DTV:
Numbers to call DTV - I-800-531-5000 (Cancel) , 1-888-333-7975 (Sign up number at store, may call to cancel too)
-If the CR is standing around waiting for you to finish your call, make it really long. Ask about other packages they offer, ask why they are better than Comcast, ask when they could come and install, ask if you get a free receiver, ask if they could repeat the information because you can't hear them, etc. This should make most reps walk away.
-Look at the rep funny when you start giving out your personal information, the "can I get some privacy"-look works great. He/She will walk away in no time.
-If they want a confirmation number, tell them the DTV rep forgot to give it to you since you asked so much.

Edit from orlando: Didnt work for me. He said he needs an account number or he cannot ring the deal. So, better get that in store and cancel it later.

Edit from Texas: In my experience, the CR called up DTV at the counter, then handed me the wired telephone. Now after I hung up and registered for DTV the CR (who is wired with a bluetooth type headset said "confirm phone call" over his headset. I thought that was I bit strange but didn't say anything. Other BB reps could have possibly been monitoring my call. So just in case, I would go ahead with the sign up in store and cancel a few days later.

An Abridged Guide with pics (refer to post #4181 for PDF version, or if this link expires):

If you are getting a free blu-ray player with your TV the $100 HDA discount for the next gen DVD player is included in the $499 you get back for the free blu-ray. You will NOT get a $499 credit for the blu-ray and a $100 for HDA next gen DVD. Your discounts will be:
$300 DTV
$100 HT Item
$100 Next Gen DVD
$399 blu-ray
$100 Install (if you bother with it)

IN CASE YOU LOST THE DIRECT TV ORDER SUPPORT NUMBER THAT THEY GAVE YOU OVER THE PHONE

They will not need your order number, just your home phone number that you signed up using.

42" HDTV from Best Buy: $499 YMMV

Deal in a nutshell: Buy TV, installation, home audio, and HD DVD player. Return everything, cancel installation and DTV (there are no penalties for doing this) but keep TV. Done. You now have an $1100 HDTV for $480. To do this right, read on.

I have discussed this deal in another thread, but think it is worthy of it's own. Kudos to Fatwalletlurker for his post in the obvious place. Success has been reported by the majority of the people. Worst case scenario you may only get $100 of the $200 installation cost back. All other returns should be simple.

BestBuy has a special right now where you get $600 off an HDTV that retails $999 or more when you buy the TV in a bundle. The way it is rung up, is that the TV shows the $600 off, yet all other components of the bundle show full price. There is NO penalty against returning or canceling all or parts of the bundle. Seeing that the TV is the only one that reflects the $600 discount, you can return/cancel all other parts of the bundle, and end up with a 42" HD LCD TV for around $480.

Here is how I did it:
  • I went to the store and bought an HDTV that was priced $999 (cannot be a power priced TV)
  • bought an HD DVD player
  • Bought an audio system
  • "Signed up" for DTV over the phone at BB (you can ‘pretend to do this, as they just hand you the phone, or actually do it and cancel it immediately on the way home).
  • Bought the TV installation

My receipt showed the $600 discount for the TV, all other items showed full price.

I was then ready to return everything. Remember, DTV needs to be canceled directly with them (no penalty for doing this), TV intstallation needs to be canceled through BB. I had no problems returning/canceling anything. End price for the TV below $500.

Here is how to do it in FW's words (again, TY fatwalletlurker):

Go HERE [bestbuy.com] and print out (select yes on all).

Purchase the following in-store:
1) DirecTV HD reciever 99$ (Some posters report this as free. You'll return/sell it anyway, so it doesn't matter) Personally I did not even buy the receiver. I just signed up for DTV over the phone (this is all that is required). I then canceled that while driving home.
2)* LG 42" 720P [bestbuy.com] $1099! Or Insignia [bestbuy.com] (BB brand) 1080p 42" LCD for $1099. See bonus [bestbuy.com] below for possible 10% off this price.
3) Awesome HD-A3 HD-DVD player, now $299 (Toshiba HD-A3) [bestbuy.com]
4)(OPTIONAL if you keep the HD Player) ** 10 free HD-DVDs: Add Bourne Identity and 300 for free, then add 3 more HD DVDs free Link [bestbuy.com], then submit rebate for 5 more.
5) Installation $200 (may vary)
6) Home audio (any for $500 which will be returned)

Total price: $2197.
Instant savings: $600.
Price at Checkout: $1597

Then you proceed to return each of the items other than the TV.

Return the HD-DVD player.

New price: $1298

Return the home audio equipment.

New price: $798

Get 2% back as a reward zone member ($20), or 4% back with a BB credit card ($40). With a new BB credit card, you also get a 0% interest for x time offer (see optional savings at bottom) Limited Time Link, 18mos 0%. There is also an offer for purchases up to triple points, allowing you to get an extra $20-40 off. Link

New price: $778

Return the DirecTV set top box and cancel your contract with them. Cancelling the contract is easy and by phone (within the first 30 days, prior to installation!). You may have to sell the box for ~$85 on eBay, Craigslist, or whatever you prefer. FWers have done this cancellation without difficulty for months (including OP).

New price: $679

Cancel installation. This is a YMMV section due to some BB staff noting the TV price shift and install bundle. FWers have posted success with cancelling at night, due to different (and possibly less attentive) staff. If you select a Panasonic HDTV, there are periodic rebates for the install price.

New price: $479

Complete YMMV price with all returns: ~$479

Final Price: Under $449 (plus tax on around $479 in most areas)

* BONUS 10% off: Link [bestbuy.com] Try to have your CSR apply this coupon to your television prior to getting your flat $600 off from the combination. If you have a TV costing $1,111 (they'll be glad to increase the price for you), this coupon brings it to $1000, and after combination to $399. This is an EXTREME YMMV, and I would ask anyone who is successful, please post a receipt for others to use as an example.

** BONUS HD-DVD info: If you do get the HD-DVD player and keep it, you are eligible for 5 free HD-DVD movies.

Some tips (TY Justinbaker):

1. The DTV cancellation over the phone is Soooo easy. Went without a hitch.

2. The salesperson may tell you you have to buy a DTV receiver for $99- DO NOT- this could cause problems if you return it- you would have to eBay it for $99. Let the DTV rep talk to the salesperson and explain that THEY will give you the receiver for free and bring it with the installer. They will tell BB to process the sku and how to.

3. Tell them to hold the hdtv for pickup later or delivery- this way you can get the returns first and make sure it will work.

4. The audio system is a PAIN because they're so big and heavy. Go for delivery or get the Klipsch 5.1 speaker set (small) and the cheapest receiver.

5. Don't do the installation "programming a harmony remote" for $150. I had to buy a harmony I'm returning.

6. If you want one that is open box or discounted have them put it full price and give you a gift card for the difference and apply this to the sale- any manager knows how to do this.

7. Do the returns today or tomorrow before BB reworks the computer to shut this down.

8. Stay calm- if it doesn't work you're out nothing but time.

9: If you have problems retruning an item, exchange it instead. This will give you a new separate receipt for the item you want to return. You should have no problem returning it after that.

I fully expect to get many thumbs down for this deal (though why anyone would vote a thumbs down on a guaranteed 60% of an HDTV is beyond me). I realize it may be too complicated for many of you. However, I feel it deserves a thread for the 'true' SDers out here who (like me) won't settle for anything but the cheapest price out there.

It is actually really simple. Buy TV, installation, home audio, and HD CD player. Return everything, cancel installation and DTV but keep TV. Done.

Yes, it has. And I have yet to see anyone say it didn't work.

I was not going to post it here, but after seeing all those deals pop up here on HDTVs for over $1K, I thought people should know about it here too.

In my opinion SDers were losing out.

I did do this for my parents (knowing they wanted a new HD TV). I had no problems doing everything as lined out.

Thanks again, Malyshka! I don't know what's up with the thumbs down.

Question: Do you cancel the installation (Best Buy's, not DirecTV's) in-store or over the phone?
