Pretty good. They also have a combo deal for HL2 + the episode pack for ~$15 if you dont have the original. Remember that the orange box also has all this along with team fortress 2 and portal. So there are plenty of options available.

No, these are standalone, you don't need the original HL2. Chronologically, Episode 1 picks up right where the original Half-Life 2 left off, with the reactor atop the Citadel in bad shape. Episode 1 ends and Episode 2 begins with the destruction of the City 17 citadel.

Definitely worth $5 to pick up these two together if you don't already have them.

Note that the Orange Box (currently $40 on Steam, special prices are announced intermittently) includes Portal (so worth it), Team Fortress 2, and Half Life 2, HL2: Ep 1, and HL2: Ep 2.
